Difference between core type Transformer and Shell type Transformer

There are the many difference between Core type Transformer and Shell type Transformer.

Difference between core type Transformer and Shell type Transformer

All the difference point is mention below and all the main difference are covered.

Difference Point 1

Core Type Transformer:

Core type transformer has considerable part of the core of a transformer which is surrounded by a coil

Shell Type Transformer:

Shell type transformer has a considerable part of the winding of the transformer which is surrounded by a core.

Difference Point 2

 Core Type Transformer:

There is only one magnetic circuit is used in the core type transformer.

Shell Type Transformer:

There are two magnetic circuit is used in the two type transformer.

Difference Point 3

 Core Type Transformer:

Cylindrical type winding is used in the core type transformer.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Sandwich type winding is used in the core type transformer.

Difference Point 4

 Core Type Transformer:

L.V. winding and H.V. windings of the core type transformer are mounted on two opposite limbs of the core.

 Shell Type Transformer:

L.V. winding and H.V. windings of the shell type transformer are mounted on central limbs of the core.

Difference Point 5

 Core Type Transformer:

Core type transformer is more suitable for high voltage transformer.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Shell type transformer is more suitable and economical for low voltage transformer.

Difference Point 6

 Core Type Transformer:

Core has two limbs in the core type transformer.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Core has three limbs in the shell type transformer.

Difference Point 7

 Core Type Transformer:

Maintenance is very easy in the core type transformer because coil can be easily removed.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Maintenance is very difficult in the core type transformer because coil can't  be easily removed because of coil is on the central limb.

Difference Point  8

 Core Type Transformer:

Shape of the core is either rectangular or circular in the core type transformer.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Shape of the core is either rectangular or cylindrical or spiral in the shell type transformer.

Difference Point  9

 Core Type Transformer:

Mean length of the coil is shorter in the core type transformer.

 Shell Type Transformer:

Mean length of the coil is longer in the shell type transformer.

Difference Point 10
